Healing Through Storytelling: A Journey of Recovery

In 2018, what began as a routine surgical procedure marked the onset of a transformative journey. Despite initial expectations, my introduction to surgery was anything but ordinary. Following a six-hour robotic colon resection to address a decade-long struggle with diverticulitis, I found myself navigating a challenging path to recovery. Little did I anticipate the emotional and physical hurdles that lay ahead. To my surprise, I found significant healing through storytelling.

The post-operative period brought forth unforeseen complications. Within days of having the staples removed from my abdomen, a seroma emerged, resulting in an open wound that demanded meticulous care and attention. As I grappled with the reality of my situation, facing both physical discomfort and emotional uncertainty, I discovered solace in the act of storytelling.

Sharing my experiences became a vital part of my healing process. Through recounting my journey to concerned friends and acquaintances, I not only found catharsis but also acknowledged the gravity of my circumstances. Storytelling became a powerful tool for affirming reality, transcending denial, and embarking on a path toward healing and recovery.

My journey of healing through storytelling revealed a universal truth: the profound impact of narrative in navigating life’s trials and tribulations. As a pastor and coach, I’ve witnessed firsthand the therapeutic effect of storytelling in facilitating healing and resilience within communities facing adversity.

Just as the Psalms testify to the transformative power of storytelling in overcoming despair, Jesus exemplifies the art of compassionate listening as a precursor to healing. Even the Apostle Paul found strength in recounting his own struggles, embracing vulnerability as a pathway to grace.

In a world marked by collective grief and trauma, creating safe spaces for storytelling is essential. At the Center for Healthy Churches, we recognize the significance of narrative in fostering healing within congregations and clergy members. Our team of experienced consultants and coaches stands ready to walk alongside you during times of crisis, offering compassion, guidance, and support.
