About Bill Owen
Dr. Bill Owen serves as a Congregational Consultant and Leadership Coach with the Center for Healthy Churches, bringing more than four decades of pastoral leadership and organizational coaching experience to his work with congregations and ministry leaders.
Bill previously served three churches across his ministry, including a 32-year tenure as pastor of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Cross Plains, Tennessee, where he developed a deep commitment to helping congregations navigate seasons of change, renewal, and mission clarity with wisdom and hope.
Known for his calm presence, strengths-based leadership style, and spiritually grounded approach, Bill specializes in visioning processes, leadership transitions, conflict transformation, governance and staff alignment, and coaching for pastors and ministry teams. His work helps churches strengthen trust, discern faithful next steps, and build healthier leadership systems capable of navigating adaptive change.
In addition to his consulting work, Bill coordinates coaching initiatives and interim pastor training for CHC and is passionate about equipping churches to lead creatively and faithfully in a rapidly changing ministry landscape.
At the heart of Bill’s work is a belief that healthy churches can become powerful sources of healing, clarity, and renewal within their communities. He is especially energized by helping congregations rediscover shared purpose and move forward together with courage and discernment.
Bill and his wife, Cindy, live in Cross Plains, Tennessee, and remain deeply grateful for a lifetime of ministry and service to the church.

What inspired you to serve as a church consultant and coach?
After many years serving as a local church pastor, I discovered that helping congregations navigate change and rediscover purpose was a calling in itself. Coaching and consulting allow me to come alongside leaders at pivotal moments and help them listen deeply for God’s next chapter.
What are your primary areas of focus?
Visioning and strategic discernment, pastoral transitions, conflict transformation, governance and staff alignment, leadership development, and coaching for resilience and adaptive change.
Can you share a memorable success story or impact from your work?
One congregation I worked with moved from a prolonged season of uncertainty into a renewed sense of shared mission through a structured visioning process. Within a year, they experienced stronger volunteer engagement, clearer leadership roles, and a renewed spirit of hope that shaped both worship and community outreach.
How do you integrate your personal faith and professional training in your consulting?
My work is rooted in spiritual discernment practices, prayerful listening, appreciative inquiry, and collaborative leadership. At the same time, I draw on proven organizational coaching tools that honor both the theological identity of a church and the practical leadership skills needed to thrive.
What kinds of churches or leaders do you feel most called to work with?
Congregations at turning points — whether facing leadership transition, conflict, growth decisions, or questions about future identity. I especially value working with leaders who are open, curious, and ready to engage faithfully with change.
Why does this work matter personally to you?
Healthy churches strengthen communities and nurture lives of faith. Walking with congregations as they rediscover hope and direction is one of the most meaningful ways I can continue serving the church beyond the local pastorate.
