Discernment Guide
The laity and clergy in Southern Baptist Churches have asked us numerous times regarding guidelines to engage in a healthy process of discernment related to recent SBC actions. As a result, we prayerfully offer these thoughts and guidelines for those involved in such deliberations.
Some churches will feel no need to address the issue, as the actions of the SBC in New Orleans accurately reflect their understanding of the role of women in ministry and in leadership positions in the church.
Others will see this as a “last straw” that solidifies their movement away from the SBC. Still, others will be caught up in a dilemma imposed upon them, which can bring significant division to their congregation if not planned and carried out thoughtfully.
Please see this document as an attempt to help those engaged in such conversations, whatever their context or history. If CHC can offer further assistance, don’t hesitate to contact us.
