“Every 500 years or so Christianity throws a Rummage Sale and changes how it does church!”
This graphic quote by the late Church Historian Phyllis Tickle reflects the deep adaptive challenges American Christian congregations face every day – changes that were present before COVID, but that are accelerating post-pandemic. The Center for Healthy Churches and PneuMatrix have been working together informally for a number of years on a variety of initiatives to serve such congregations. PneuMatrix is a west coast-based organization with ties to Presbyterian life, and the Center for Healthy Churches with offices on both the east coast and in Texas has had ties to Baptist life.
As denominational ties and structures have a steadily diminishing impact on congregational life and as technology erases geography as a barrier for consultation and discernment, the leadership of both CHC and PneuMatrix see a growing need for a robust, trans-denominational approach to serving congregations.
PneuMatrix and the Center for Healthy Churches partnered at the start of the COVID pandemic to create the Changing Church Webinar, a weekly conversation that pulled together an ecumenical group of thought leaders focused on assisting congregations. Since its inception, the webinar has hosted over 200 different guest panelists from 21 different denominations offering their insights and experience to an ecumenical audience of more than 2,000 individuals representing nearly 1,400 congregations.

Our partnership will offer broader array of services to congregations across the trans-denominational spectrum. This deeper joint bench includes coaching for congregations during pastoral transitions, minister search assistance, congregational transformation, conflict prevention/response, and “right-sizing” a staff – for an individual congregation or a larger denominational judicatory. Their focus on “Traditioned Innovation” (L Gregory Jones) nudges churches to match their unique DNA with emerging forms of missional leadership.
While both organizations will continue to operate as independent entities, their collaboration offers a shared list of consultants able to serve congregations through either organization, enabling us to pair consultants with various specialties laser-focused on your church’s particular needs. Churches and pastors can access the shared content and deep bench of consulting services through their joint website at: TheChangingChurch.org
